Complex database systems, including Microsoft Exchange Server, slowly degrade and will inevitably fail over time unless they are properly maintained. Database health has always been the weakest link in most Exchange environments. According to the META Group, 20 percent of unplanned Exchange downtime is caused by database failure. Left unchecked, Exchange database growth, errors and degradation impair system performance and stability, as well the ability to maintain effective backup and recovery operations. Larger databases take longer to access, backup, and restore.
Thanks to increasing compliance and performance demands, archiving is also beginning to occupy Exchange administrators’ time.
