Exchange consists of a complex directory structure containing data stores that are constantly growing. e-mail and other Exchange items are being added, changed, and deleted on a continuous basis.

The result is an Exchange Server with highly fragmented and increasingly inefficient index pointers, data errors and inconsistencies. Over time, Exchange performance and user productivity suffers along with  the ever-expanding data stores that consume disk space in excess of the actual data being stored.
