What if we are going to upgrade to Exchange 2007, can we transfer previously licensed stores?

DigiScope® store licenses are tied to the actual storage EDB files and all of its backup copies. Under normal circumstances once a license is applied to a store it is considered used and may not be transferred, migrated or used on any other information store. That being said, customers already have enough hurdles to overcome when upgrading their infrastructure to Exchange 2007. We don’t want DigiScope licensing issues to add another stumbling block to the already painful, costly and time consuming upgrade process. Therefore, we are making a onetime exception and allowing customers to transfer existing 2000/2003 Exchange information store DigiScope licenses for use on Exchange 2007 information stores.

NOTE: It is important to understand that only the new storage EDB’s replacing the old ones are eligible for the free store license transfer and the following conditions must be met:

  • The new Exchange 2007 server has to be in the same domain as the old server.
  • You must first setup the new 2007 server, migrate the mailboxes to the new Exchange 2007 server and then retire the old Exchange server before you can request a free license transfer.
    • All used 2000 and 2003 store licenses must be transferred to the new Exchange 2007 Server at the same time, i.e. this cannot be a staged transfer, it’s a onetime event.
  • To request the transfer and receive the new transfer licenses customers need to contact Lucid8 Customer Service to request a license transfer. Customer Service will issue a License Transfer Agreement which MUST be filled out and signed by a corporate executive before the new 2007 licenses are issued.

NOTE: Unused store licenses from a store pack do not need to be transferred since they can be applied to any new Exchange 2007 Server stores owned by the original licensee.

License Transfer Example:

  • If you purchased a 4 store count / license pack and used 3 of the licenses on 3 different Exchange 2000 or 2003 EDB’s.
    • You still have one store license available for future use on any Exchange server owned by your organization.
NOTE: Even though the license is available for application to a future store, the maintenance period begins at the purchase date, just like the store licenses applied.
  • You setup a new Exchange 2007 server and transfer the mailboxes to 3 new Exchange 2007 store EDB’s.
  • Once the mailbox move is complete and the old Exchange server is decommissioned i.e. wiped out and is no longer accessible, take the following actions;
    • Request the License Transfer Agreement by contacting Lucid8 Customer Service
    • Complete, and have the License Transfer Agreement signed by a corporate executive
    • Fax the agreement to 425.462.9365
    • Notify Lucid8 Customer Service that the agreement has been faxed
    • Request the 3 new Exchange 2007 licenses via the DigiScope license request process
    • If all criteria have been met as outlined above then Customer Service will direct the licensing department to issue 3 new licenses.

NOTE: The previously unused license doesn’t need to be utilized during the license transfer process. You may keep all previously unused licenses for future use on any Exchange server owned by your organization. However, remember that even though the license is available for use with a future store, the maintenance period begins at the purchase date, just like the store licenses applied.
